Art Ministry

Graphic communication is emerging as an essential element of worship services. Our sanctuary installation work encompasses several projects throughout the church year. We have built a team of members who conceptualize, design, and execute works of visual, graphic and decorative art that enhance the quality of worship, communication and even healing within the church, by direct involvement in creating the worship environment. It serves a need for more inclusive, engaging, and contemporary worship activity, and appeals to a broader and younger demographic of members.

Projects are timed to coincide with seasonal and church calendar events. The Sanctuary and Narthex are the areas we focus on. The general structure of the projects is an initial concept session focusing on a liturgical theme. Reflection and personal expression are developed into a design concept. Subsequent sessions allow for detailed planning, execution and installation.

The team meets Monday nights on Zoom at 7:00 pm.  Anyone is welcome to join us, either to participate, ask questions or observe.

COVID-19 Projects

It's no secret that 2020 was a challenging year. Due to the pandemic, our sanctuary was off limits, so we moved our liturgical art operations outside, utilizing the entire grounds of the church. This challenged our creativity as well as stretching our faith and resulted in some pretty spectacular, and sometimes surprising, developments. See our COVID-19 work here.

The wooden prayer cross on the lawn of the church is constructed of 4x6" lumber and is covered with chicken wire to provide a place where people can insert prayers, photos or other objects of personal/spiritual significance. One of our members has attached a ribbon to the crossbar for each day the pandemic has been going on. The crown of thorns was attached on Good Friday.

For Easter Sunday the thorns and purple robe were removed and flowers, mostly daffodils, were inserted in the wire, covering the cross.

Our Pentecost installation has traditionally been over the top, and the outdoor venue took it to new heights. The organza streams from the attic vent window, pouring down onto the cross below. Posting this photo on the church's Facebook page resulted in a reach of over 125,000 people — the first time we've had something like this go viral. Story and photos were featured in Presbyterians Today magazine.
